Traceability and digital twins: SWD as a driver of innovation with solutions
SWD began systematically and digitally recording process and measurement data many years ago. Today, we have access to an enormous base of production data on lamination stacks from many projects: Specifically, we have process data for lamination stacks from over 12 million BPS® segments and over 1.5 million EPS® stacks. In addition, we have hundreds of thousands of individual items of stiffness data for bonding varnish (Backlack) stacks as well as hundreds of thousands of items of geometric data. This data is constantly being added to with new projects – you can also benefit from this in future developments and projects.
Effective practical answers to complex questions thanks to the SWD data pool
All data is stored in a central database, the SWD data pool. The data can be graphically displayed, evaluated, correlated, or exported from the data pool. We can answer questions in no time – these questions include:
- What effect does the grinding condition of the punching tool have on the stack with NO10 material?
- How large is the bonding varnish (Backlack) shrinkage in the NO30 material from a particular supplier?
- How does the diameter of a segmented stator change with different batches of material?
What exactly do we measure with material data, process parameters, and measurement data?
Material data includes information on material batches, strip numbers, bonding varnish (Backlack) shrinkage, etc. It also provides information on the stability and uniformity of the material.
Process parameters include information such as the number of laminations, stack height, and bonding parameters. Bonding parameters include, for example, temperatures, pressures, etc.
Measurement data provides information on stack heights, flatness, parallelism, weights, stacking factors, etc.
New measurement methods developed in-house for bonded stacks and stator segments
SWD develops its own new measurement methods to obtain even more specific information from production. We have developed our own measurement method to evaluate the stiffness of bonded stacks. We use it in series production and it provides us with all the required verifications and analyses. In order to measure the diameter of stator segments, we have developed various measurement methods that have been tried and tested and are used in series production.

We have special solutions that are integrated directly into the production line. They measure every stator segment and, in addition to basic data such as stack height and tooth width, also measure the level of parallelism, flatness, squareness, weight, stacking factor, and diameter in the installation up to 100 percent. With this data, we can precisely quantify the impact of material and process and improve the lamination stacks.
SWD as a driver of innovation – with magnetic measurement data in the future
We are also working on measuring and documenting 100 percent of the magnetic properties in the production line. This makes it possible to quantify the impact of material and production on magnetics, and the measurement data serves as the basis for an even better lamination solution.
