New industrialisation solution implemented

SWD AG is developing and building a new, modular, convertible and fully integrated EPS® system for the production of various baked stators and rotors for a customer in Europe.

As part of a customer project, we have developed a new modular and convertible EPS® system for the production of different bonded stators and rotors. The system is flexible enough to be adapted to different product geometries and aims to enable fully automated production in large series. In cooperation with Schuler Pressen, we are realising the world’s first fully automated and interlinked production of boned stators and rotors.

The challenge was to apply proven EPS® technology to larger components in a modular and flexible way and in the shortest possible time.

In line with SWD’s principle of ‘We support you from the idea through feasibility and the development of samples and prototypes on our Flex system to full-scale production at your site’, we have designed a complete production line in collaboration with Schuler Pressen, which guarantees seamless and efficient production.

We are a world leader in the development of advanced electrical steel lamination stacks. We cover the entire process from idea to industrialisation and have focused on industrialisation with an emphasis on bonding varnish (Backlack) technology.

The advantages are many. On the one hand, the SWD production process has proven itself in the industrialised bonding of full circle cuts with over 1.5 million parts delivered. On the other hand, EPS® technology is also well established and offers a reliable solution for mass production.

The main features of the project can be summarised as follows:

We were the first company in the world to achieve the industrialisation of bonded stators with a diameter of over 400 mm for truck drives.

In addition, the development of EPS® baking tools to the SWD standard with a quick-change system was advanced and the EPS® system was designed for three different stator and rotor geometries so that a changeover can be achieved within a few hours. The robot grippers and other interfaces to the components are subject to SWD standardisation and can be changed in a very short time.

There is also the option of modular expansion to increase capacity by integrating additional baking stations. This allows the capacity of the system to be tailored to the customer’s needs.

Facts

  • Stators up to >400 mm diameter
  • Conversion to other geometries in a short period of time
  • Modular concept for capacity expansion
  • Process validation via the EPS® Flex system
  • Digital production data/digital twins allows production to be optimised and monitored

In summary, SWD’s EPS® system represents a pioneering solution for the fully automated production of stators and rotors in large series. The combination of innovative technology, modular flexibility and comprehensive process support ensures optimum customer support from the initial idea through to industrial production.
